JJ Ncongwane

Bukiwe Bella Malangwane
JJ Ncongwane ‘Sigcilisekulunga’ is a teacher by profession and an award-winner author. Ncongwane is a seasoned and a prolific Siswati author of note who has written a number of books in almost all the genres. He is married to Sibongile Zwane and he is a born again Christian and a father of five. He is in possession of a BA (Hons) (UP), BA degree (Unisa) and a Secondary Teacher’s Diploma (Mgwenya College).
His first poetry book Emagalelo that he co-authored with his college mates, MS Mbuyane & the late ZDD Mokoena was published in 1985 while there were still students at Mgwenya College. In 1986 he published his second anthology of Siswati poetry titled Kuyawuphela Situnge which he co-authored with his younger brother, Dr Sipho J Ncongwane.
He taught at Hlabangemehlo and Chief Jerry High School and left teaching in 2001. He also worked at the Silulu Lexicography Unit as Editor-in-Chief. He is currently (2020) employed by the Parliament of the Republic of South Africa as a Siswati/English translator.
JJ Ncongwane was awarded the following literary awards:

He received R10, which was his first literary prize for his short story Lunjalo-ke Lutsandvo in 1985. This story was included in the college magazine and it also appears in his volume of short stories titled Tikhatsi Letimatima.

His novel Tikhatsi Tiyagucuka won him a first prize in Betrams VO Award for African Literature which was run by Skotaville publishers in 1990.

In 1989 his drama book, Mncwi Ngitake Ngibone won him the first prize of Educum Drama Competition

His collection of Siswati One-Act Plays titled Intsatsakusa won him a second prize in African Heritage Awards in 1993 which was organized by Maskew Miller Longman.

In 2000, his novel Loyishayile Sewuyosile scooped the first prize in M-Net Book Prize in Nguni Languages category

In 2005, his collection of Siswati short stories titled Emahemuhemu won him a second prize in Mpumalanga Siswati Literature Exhibition Launch.

In 2010, he was selected to receive the Nadine Gordimer Short Story Award (for writing in African Languages in the RSA) 2009 for his volume of short stories book titled Tikhatsi Letimatima.

In 2018, he was honoured and recognised by the Mpumalanga Department of Culture, Sports and Recreation for Siswati Literature Development.
JJ Ncongwane has recently focused in writing novels such as Tinyembeti Tendvodza, Ematfunti Etikhatsi, Kutawusho Sikhatsi, Lily WaseLilydale, Ngingamane Ngicabuze Inja, Live Litawutsini and Kuyawush’ Imifula.
As he is left with few years to retire, his prayer is: “Lord, prepare me to end well.”
Bukiwe Bella Malangwane ‘BB’ is a retired professional teacher, an author, editor and translator. She started writing Siswati stories while she was still a student and excels in writing of prose although she writes other genres. She holds the following qualifications; BA+ CDE (University of Botswana and Swaziland), BA Hons. (UNISA) MA + D Phil (UniZulu). She taught for forty one years and left teaching in 2011. She is now a full time freelancer, and works with different companies.
As an author she was awarded for Siswati Literature Development (Department of Culture, Sports and Recreation- 2019) Continued writing and publishing Siswati Language (NLSA-2018); Promotion and Development of Siswati language in written and Oral Literature (PanSALB-2017); Outstanding Literature: Siswati (Department of Arts and Culture-2005): Second prize for a novel Liphume nebovu (De Jaguar Haum-1989) and many more others.
BB has contributed in many anthologies for example; Ingcamu (Shuter and Shooter), Siyaticeketsa (Juta), Idubukele (Shuter and Shooter), Tivunguvungu (Shuter and Shooter), Indlela Ilukhuni (Macmillan), Tayitolo netalomuhla (Macmillan) and others. She wrote many children’s stories for young children. She is also a core author in the development of Siswati Language manuals for all grades for example; Letfwese (Maskew Miller), Sivula Emasango (Maskew Miller), Sanibonani (Via Afrika) and others.
